Areas of Study: Comparative Politics, Mexico/Latin America, Methodology, Political Parties, Voting Behavior

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, where I also currently serve as Undergraduate Honors Thesis Advisor.

My research focuses on political parties, elections, and voting behavior.  My book, Why Dominant Parties Lose: Mexico's Democratization in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge University Press, 2007), offers a new theory of single-party dominance based on the party affiliation decisions of individual politicians.  It was
awarded the 2008 Best Book Award from the Comparative Democratization Section of the APSA.

Currently, I am Senior Project Personell on the Mexico 2006 Panel Study with funding from the National Science Foundation and Co-Principal Investigator on the Mexico 2006 Candidate and Party Elite Survey.  I have published work in the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, PS: Political Science and Politics, Latin American Politics and Society, Politica y Gobierno, Foreign Affairs en Espanol, and book chapters.  My other research interests include research methods, social movements, authoritarian regimes, and democratization.
