I teach American Politics in the Government Department at the University of Texas at Austin. My particular interests are in the U.S. Congress, American Political Development, and Political History. I received my B.A. from the University of Richmond, my M.S. in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Rochester, and my M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University. I have published one book, The Power of the People: Congressional Competition, Public Attention, and Voter Retribution, and numerous articles on subjects ranging from presidential rhetoric to congressional careers and the Louisiana Purchase to the Pendleton Act of 1883. I have also published a number of chapters in edited books. My current research focuses on party polarization in the modern Congress.
