LAMP: An Educational Adventure
LAMP: AN EDUCATIONAL ADVENTURE By Louis E. DeMoll, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Social Work University of Texas at Austin (Written in 1992) In the spring of 1989, Dr. Thomas M. Hatfield, Dean of Continuing Education at the University of Texas, called together a small group of active retirees and invited them to assist The University in designing a new continuing education learning activity for the Central Texas area. Participants in the development meeting came from diverse backgrounds: such as the chemical industry, banking, social work, university professors, the restaurant business, and long time community volunteers. The common denominator for the group was an interest in on-going learning experiences.
Dr. Hatfield announced that the new program would be aimed at individuals who were fifty-five years of age and older. He cited a similar educational outreach endeavor at the University of Delaware that has been readily supported by retirees living in the Wilmington, Delaware area.
