More about LAMP

UT LAMP™ is an ongoing program for adults who wish to continue their lifelong learning pursuits. All classes are held at the Thompson Conference Center on the University of Texas campus.

The three major objectives of LAMP are:

  • to provide a classroom setting where individuals from diverse backgrounds can obtain knowledge in a wide variety of subject areas
  • to provide a forum for those individuals to meet, to share interests and to cultivate new friendships
  • to ensure maximum commitment and participation by having the members donate their own talents and time performing all the needed administrative, technical and infrastructure support to the classroom and ancillary LAMP offerings

Application for membership is available to interested adults, and LAMP seeks those persons who want to pursue lifelong learning. An interest in being kept up-to-date on a variety of issues and subjects is the only other prerequisite for this eclectic program. LAMP is successful because its members perform all of its functions on a voluntary basis and, thus, form a cohesive community of shared interests. All members - old and new - have ample opportunities to serve.

THE LAMP CURRICULUM
Lamp classes are composed of one hour presentations by individuals who are expert in the subject matter. These independent, 1-hour lectures are presented by UT faculty and administrators, independent scholars, local professionals from various disciplines, and leadership persons in business, non-profits and the public sector.

LAMP members comprise a source of rich talent and experience and therefore also serve as a source of instructors. Members are provided with a complete schedule of all lectures prior to the start of each semester.

The current LAMP curriculum is primarily comprised of six major categories:

  • Creative World
  • History
  • Lifestyles
  • Public Affairs
  • Business
  • Science & Technology

WHERE LAMP MEETS
LAMP sessions are held on the University of Texas at Austin campus in the Thompson Conference Center (TCC), Dean Keeton (formerly 26th) and Red River Streets. Convenient parking is usually available next to the TCC, with entrance to the parking lot from Red River Street. A cafeteria is available throughout the day at TCC.

WHEN LAMP MEETS
LAMP has three six-week terms, one each in the fall, winter and the spring. During each week, classes are conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30-10:45 and from 11:00-12:15. Each session includes 15 minutes for questions and answers. One hour sessions are held on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:00 with a six-week seminar being conducted as one of the afternoons' session. Thursday afternoons are reserved for local instructional field trips. A Discussion Group meets each Monday morning throughout the year for a spirited discussion of current events.
